چکیده
It is important to always monitor the bioaccumulation potential for heavy metals by organisms especially edible ones, assess their risk human health. This study evaluated of in shell and soft tissues snails. Forty snails each were purchased from Ikire Ore towns. The snails’ shells, feet, digestive tracts glands analysed using an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. results showed that concentration varied with location species snail. Archachatina marginata accumulated higher concentrations than A. Ikire. Pb Achatina achatina Ikire, Cd are slightly above FAO/WHO permissible limits. Foot bioaccumulated more while gland marginata. concluded at some levels toxic metals. capable being used as a sentinel physiological biochemical imbalances living arising accumulation Key words: Bioaccumulation, metal pollution, snails, achatina,

African land snail Achatina marginatus, as bioindicator of environmental pollution
Activity of xanthine oxidase, levels of lipid peroxidation and ascorbic acid were studied in African land snail (Achatina marginatus) from two sites with different pollution potentials. Lipid peroxidation was significantly higher in the snails from the polluted site compared to the value obtained from the same species from the control site. Similarly, the activity of xanthine oxidase in the sna...
متن کاملGiant African snail, Achatina fulica, as a snail predator
Individuals of Achatina fulica (Bowdich, 1822) were observed preying on veronicellid slugs at two sites on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. As such, the presence of A. fulica may pose a greater threat to terrestrial mollusc conservation than previously imagined. It is our hope that this note provides some impetus for other researchers to explore the possible predation impacts of introduced populatio...
متن کاملA new glycosaminoglycan from the giant African snail Achatina fulica.
A new glycosaminoglycan has been isolated from the giant African snail Achatina fulica. This polysaccharide had a molecular weight of 29,000, calculated based on the viscometry, and a uniform repeating disaccharide structure of -->4)-2-acetyl,2-deoxy-alpha-D-glucopyranose (1-->4)-2-sulfo-alpha-L-idopyranosyluronic acid (1-->. This polysaccharide represents a new, previously undescribed glycosam...
متن کاملHeavy Metal Content in the African Giant Snail Archachatina Marginata (swainson, 1821) (gastropoda: Pulmonata: Achatinidae) in Southern Nigeria
Heavy metal concentrations in the African giant snail Archachatina marginata (Swainson) from nine localities in southern Nigeria ranged from 0.77 to 7.51 mg kg Pb; 3.06–46.9 mg kg Fe; 0.03–0.40 mg kg Ni; 0.04–0.12 mg kg Cu; 0.71–4.51 mg kg Co; 0.67–1.27 mg kg Mn; 0.99–3.28 mg kg Cd; 0.08–0.22 mg kg Zn; Cr was below the limit of detection. Concentrations of Pb, Fe, Ni, Cu, Co, Cd and Zn in the s...
متن کاملStimulation of Shell Regeneration by Crude Extract of Subesophaqeal Ganglionic Mass in Giant African Snails, Achatina fulica (Bowdich)
The distribution of cells that stained positively with paraldehyde fuchsin (PAF) and negatively with chrome-hematoxylin phloxine (CH) in the subesophageal ganglionic mass of Achatina fulica has been mapped. The PAF-positive cells occur in the visceral ganglion, each cell contains electron-dense elementary granules of 1,300 Angstrom in diameter. From serial section, it showed that the PAF-positi...
